New Wrestling Mats at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Create More Space to Train

Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu is continuing to make improvements around the gym, and our latest upgrade is focused directly on the wrestling room. We have replaced the tatami-style mats in the wrestling area with traditional wrestling mats, giving our athletes a larger and more purpose-built space for wrestling practice.

The biggest difference is immediately noticeable when you step into the room. Our new wrestling mats cover more of the available floor, creating additional usable training space for takedowns, scrambling, live wrestling, and the other high-paced situations that are a regular part of our practices.

Tatami mats have served us well throughout the gym and remain an excellent surface for Jiu-Jitsu. However, wrestling has different demands. Traditional wrestling mats provide the type of surface wrestlers are accustomed to using in school practices, clubs, and competitions.

For our wrestling program, we wanted the room to feel like a true wrestling space.

The additional mat coverage is particularly important as the program continues to grow. More mat space means more athletes can work at the same time while giving partners additional room to wrestle through positions without constantly running into another group or reaching the edge of the training area.

The upgrade also gives us more flexibility in how we structure wrestling practices. We can create larger live areas, give athletes more space for standing exchanges, and better accommodate groups with different experience levels.

Wrestling has become an increasingly important part of what we do at Black Flag. We have athletes who train specifically for wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu students looking to improve their stand-up game, and competitors who combine elements of both sports. Having a dedicated wrestling room with traditional mats gives all of those athletes another resource to continue developing.

Our approach to training also makes having additional space especially valuable. We use live situations and games that require athletes to react to their partners, make decisions, and solve problems under resistance. Wrestling does not happen in one stationary spot, so having more room allows athletes to move naturally and continue working through positions.

The new wrestling mats at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu are also part of a much larger effort to continue improving our facility. From deep cleaning our entire mat room to upgrading cleaning equipment and making improvements outside the building, we are constantly looking at what we can do next to make the academy better.

Some improvements are big. Others might seem small. But they all add up to creating a better place for our members to train.

For our wrestlers, this particular improvement is a big one.

Instead of adapting a Jiu-Jitsu mat space for wrestling, athletes now have access to a room covered with traditional wrestling mats and more usable space to train. Whether someone is preparing for their next school wrestling season, working on offseason development, or trying to add better wrestling to their Jiu-Jitsu game, the room is ready for them.

We’re excited to put the new mats to work and continue growing wrestling at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu in Rockford.
