IBJJF Indianapolis Open Recap

The IBJJF Indianapolis Open was a strong one for the Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu team. Over the weekend, nine athletes from Black Flag traveled to Indianapolis to compete in one of the most best tournaments of the spring. The IBJJF events consistently attract tough competition from across the Midwest and beyond, and our team showed up ready to represent both Rockford and Pedigo Submission Fighting.

One of the standout performances of the day came from Caden, who captured gold in the white belt gi ultra heavy division. Competing in a tough bracket, Caden showed composure and determination throughout his three matches, ultimately securing first place and bringing home a well-earned gold medal for the team.

Kane also had a strong showing, earning a bronze medal in his blue belt no-gi division. The blue belt ranks are always competitive, and Kane battled through a tough bracket to secure a place on the podium. His performance reflected the hard work he has been putting in on the mats at Black Flag.

Jeff Larsen made an immediate impact in his purple belt no-gi debut. Jeff took silver in his weight division and continued his run through the absolute division, capturing another gold medal. Making the podium in both divisions in a debut performance is not easy, and Jeff’s result showed the high level of preparation and confidence he brought into the tournament.

Andrew Yarbro also added to the team’s success by earning bronze in his purple belt Gi division. Purple belt brackets are often filled with experienced competitors, and Andrew fought hard in each match.

Another major highlight came from Trevor Shultz, who had an incredible performance in the black belt no-gi divisions. Trevor won double gold, dominating both of his brackets.

Beyond the individual results, the team accomplishment at the IBJJF Indianapolis Open was just as impressive. The Pedigo Submission Fighting team took home first place overall in the Adult No-Gi team standings. This is a significant achievement at any IBJJF event and reflects the strength of the entire association.

For the Black Flag athletes, the day ended with another proud moment as the team brought the trophy back to Rockford for their contribution to the team effort. Traveling together, competing together, and supporting one another is a big part of what makes these tournaments meaningful for the team.

This IBJJF Indianapolis Open shows just how strong the Black Flag competition team continues to grow. With multiple podium finishes, double gold performances, and a major team trophy for the Pedigo Submission Fighting association, the trip to Indianapolis was a successful one for everyone involved. The work continues back on the mats as the team prepares for the next challenge ahead.
