No-Gi Open Mat: Fridays at Black Flag

If you’re looking for extra mat time and more live rounds, the No-Gi Open Mat at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect opportunity. Held every Friday night at 6 PM, right after our 5 PM Grappling Foundations class, this session gives students a chance to train freely, experiment with stuff, and finish the week strong.

A No-Gi Open Mat is different from a traditional class. There is no formal instruction or set curriculum. Instead, we use the time to work techniques, work specific positions, and roll with a variety of training partners. This flexibility allows each student to focus on what they personally need to improve, whether that’s working a submission, improving conditioning, or simply getting more live experience.

One of the biggest advantages of attending No-Gi Open Mat is the variety of training you get. You’ll roll with teammates of different sizes, skill levels, and styles, which helps develop adaptability and problem-solving skills.

The 5 PM Grappling Foundations class focuses on building core skills and confidence, and the No-Gi Open Mat immediately afterward gives students a chance to apply what they just learned in a real training environment. It’s one of the best ways to accelerate progress while still feeling supported by coaches and teammates.

For competitors and advanced students, Friday’s No-Gi Open Mat is often where the hardest rounds happen. It’s a chance to test strategies, push the pace, and get valuable mat time before weekend tournaments or upcoming events. The atmosphere is competitive but respectful, reflecting the culture at Black Flag where everyone helps each other grow.

Beyond the technical benefits, the No-Gi Open Mat has become a key part of the team culture. It’s a time when the room comes together, training hard while keeping things laid back and fun. Whether you’re rolling hard or working through details with a partner, the environment encourages learning and consistency.

If you want to improve faster, get more comfortable in live situations, or simply enjoy more time on the mats, make Friday night part of your routine. The No-Gi Open Mat at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu starts at 6 PM every Friday, right after the 5 PM Grappling Foundations class. Show up, train hard, and finish your week the right way.
