Why Wrestling Matters in Jiu-Jitsu

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the fight often starts on the feet—and that’s where wrestling gives you the edge. While BJJ is known for its ground game, the ability to control where the match takes place can be a game changer. Knowing how to defend a takedown or hit one of your own gives you the upper hand, both in competition and in real-life self-defense scenarios.

Wrestling builds explosive power, strong hips, balance, and pressure—qualities that transfer seamlessly to Jiu-Jitsu. Whether you want to improve your stand-up skills for tournaments or simply round out your grappling game, incorporating wrestling into your training is a smart move.

What to Expect at Sunday Wrestling Open Mats

Our Sunday Wrestling Open Mats at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu are informal, no-gi sessions focused on live rounds and position-specific training. You’ll find a mix of wrestling-focused grapplers, BJJ practitioners looking to sharpen their stand-up, and plenty of opportunities to learn, drill, and get high-quality rounds in.

  • Where: Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu – 21 Airport Dr, Rockford, IL
  • Who: Open to all grapplers, regardless of gym affiliation or experience level
