Rodrick Wortham Training Video Gives a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu
Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu is always looking for new ways to help students learn, grow, and enjoy their time on the mats. That’s one of the reasons we love bringing in talented coaches from outside our academy to share their knowledge and experiences. This past week, we had the opportunity to welcome our friend Rodrick Wortham from Milwaukee to lead our Thursday evening class, and the result was one of the most engaging training sessions we’ve had in a long time.
If you weren’t able to make it, we’ve put together a Rodrick Wortham Training Video so you can see exactly what the evening looked like.

Rather than teaching a traditional class built around memorizing techniques, Rodrick introduced students to several ecological training games designed to help athletes develop through live problem solving. Instead of repeating movements over and over, students were encouraged to explore different solutions, react to changing situations, and discover what worked through experience. This style of learning helps athletes build skills that transfer directly into live sparring and competition.
One of the biggest highlights of the evening was a game of Jiu-Jitsu Hangman. It wasn’t your typical game. Students worked together using their grappling knowledge to solve challenges while keeping the atmosphere fun and competitive. The game created plenty of laughs throughout the room while reinforcing important concepts in a way that kept everyone engaged from beginning to end.
The ecological games that followed challenged students to make decisions under pressure rather than relying on memorized sequences. Every round forced athletes to adapt to their training partners and find solutions in real time. This type of training develops timing, awareness, and confidence while making every repetition meaningful. It is an approach that closely aligns with how we teach at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu and one of the reasons we were excited to have Rodrick share his perspective with our students.
Bringing in coaches like Rodrick benefits everyone in the room. Every instructor has different experiences, coaching methods, and ways of communicating ideas. Learning from a variety of people helps students become more adaptable while keeping training fresh and enjoyable. Whether someone had been training for years or had only recently started Jiu-Jitsu, there was something valuable to take away from the class.
The evening also highlighted one of the best parts of the grappling community. Jiu-Jitsu is about more than techniques and competition. It is about building relationships with people who share the same passion for learning and improving. Having Rodrick make the trip from Milwaukee to spend an evening with our team is a great example of how connected the community has become.
We want to thank Rodrick Wortham for taking the time to visit Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu and share his knowledge with our students. His energy, creativity, and teaching style made for an outstanding class, and we hope to have him back on the mats again soon.
