Grappling Games Chicago Recap: Black Flag Earns Gold and Valuable Experience

The Grappling Games Chicago highlights another strong showing for Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu as five athletes stepped onto the competition mats to test themselves against quality opponents. With two youth competitors and three adults representing the academy, the tournament was filled with growth, hard-fought matches, and several podium finishes.

Our youth team was led by Kamassa and Taylor, who both competed in the gi and no-gi divisions. They put together outstanding performances throughout the day, demonstrating the techniques they have been developing in the academy while competing with confidence and determination. More importantly, they represented Black Flag with great sportsmanship and a willingness to challenge themselves against new opponents.

The adult division featured two of our newer competitors, making this event an important milestone in their Jiu-Jitsu journeys. Competition can be intimidating, especially the first time, but both athletes embraced the challenge and gained valuable experience that will continue to help them improve.

Another standout performance came from Jeff Larsen, who continued his strong competition season with an outstanding run through the purple belt division. Jeff captured the gold medal after dominating his bracket, including an impressive submission victory just 20 seconds into his opening match.

Kevin had an exceptional tournament, earning second place in the gi division before returning to capture first place in the no-gi division. His performances reflected the hard work he has consistently put into training, and it was rewarding to see that effort translate into success on competition day.

Lewis also made his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition debut at the event. Although he came up just short in both matches, he fought hard from start to finish and showed tremendous composure for a first-time competitor. Every tournament provides lessons, and Lewis left with valuable experience that will make him even more prepared the next time he competes.

One of the biggest takeaways from this Grappling Games Chicago Recap is that success is measured by much more than medals. Competition allows athletes to test themselves, identify areas for improvement, and gain confidence through experience. Every member of the Black Flag team returned home with something valuable, whether it was a podium finish, newfound confidence, or lessons to apply in the training room.

At Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu, we encourage students to compete because it accelerates growth and provides opportunities to challenge themselves in ways that regular training cannot. Whether it is a child’s first tournament or an experienced competitor chasing another medal, every match contributes to long-term development.

We are incredibly proud of Kamassa, Taylor, Kevin, Lewis, and everyone else who represented Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu at the event. Their effort, determination, and sportsmanship reflected the culture we continue to build every day on the mats. Congratulations to all of our competitors, and we look forward to seeing what the team accomplishes at the next tournament.

SEO Titleo step outside your comfort zone and compete is something that deserves recognition, regardless of the final result. Congratulations to Kamassa, Taylor, Kevin, Lewis, and everyone else who took the challenge. We are excited to get back on the mats and continue preparing for the next tournament together.
